Andorra

Andorra is a destination to visit all year round

Andorra is a country to be experienced 365 days a year, and each season has its own special charm! In spring, nature awakens, in summer the sun and the good weather invite you to extend your days in the mountains, and autumn is ideal to escape from routine after your holidays. And the first snowfalls are the first sign that winter is approaching, marking the start of the ski season.
Each season offers different experiences to enjoy in your own way and with whoever you want, whether you are travelling as a couple, with your family or with friends.
Here we tell you all about it!

Spring bursts out in all its splendour

It is the favourite time of the year for many. Temperatures are more pleasant when it comes to taking advantage of the last of the snow to go skiing before the resorts close, ski touring or snowshoeing. But it is also a perfect time for cycling without getting cold or going for a walk or run in the city or the mountains when the snow is gone.
In May and June, the first sporting events and open-air music festivals begin in Andorra and continue until the beginning of autumn.

The quietest season

Another reason to be a fan of this season is that it is less crowded compared to summer or winter. After Easter and before July, there are fewer visitors to Andorra. You’ll be able to stroll and go shopping at your leisure, and you won’t have to stress about booking a table in one of the country’s busiest restaurants. But what’s more, if you get away in spring, you’ll enjoy better prices 😉. Book your spring break on our website and benefit from an extra 10% discount.

In summer you won’t stop!

Parties, festivals and outdoor activities, as well as trail running, road cycling and mountain biking competitions are always on the agenda – check out the events calendar to make sure you don’t miss a thing!
The word that best defines summer in Andorra is: active. These are the days to pack your backpack and go hiking. It doesn’t matter if you climb a peak or reach a lake: nothing compares to having breakfast or lunch surrounded by the sounds of nature. In Andorra, you’ll find hiking trails available for all levels and with durations that are affordable for everyone.

Much more than hiking

You can also set aside a day for the endless activities in the heart of nature offered by the ski resorts during the summer months, perfect for children, without forgetting to make time for culture! Summer gives you the chance to visit the Romanesque churches that are only open at this time of year, or to attend museum nights with small concerts, performances and cultural routes.
And to round off the summer season: an essential part of your visit is a sunset over the mountains from one of Andorra’s viewpoints, an impressive souvenir to take home with you!

Autumn is all about colours, flavours and lots of shopping

During this time of year, getaways to make the most of the weekends and long weekends in autumn are commonplace. Temperatures are still pleasant and there are enough daylight hours to stroll through the streets of the country and have a drink on the terraces.
At the end of September, nature begins its transformation and changes its colour palette from green to ochre, orange and reddish tones. Undoubtedly, a visual spectacle that captivates everyone who sees it.

The shopping festival

In November, the Andorra Shopping Festival is held, a festival for shopping lovers. During the weekends, in the country’s shopping centre you can attend live performances, travelling shows, as well as take advantage of discounts and special promotions. This is the time to get ready for the coming winter season and renew your ski equipment.
For foodies, Andorra Taula is also here, the country’s culinary days whose proposals will delight you 😉.

And then comes the star season of the year: winter.

Skiing, snowboarding and snow activities are the things to look forward to in December in Andorra. This season is synonymous not only with snow sports, but also with celebrations. Christmas, New Year and Epiphany festivities fill the streets with a festive spirit. Lights, Christmas markets and decorations create a magical atmosphere, ideal for enjoying with family or friends. In winter Andorra also celebrates Carnival, a great opportunity to discover local traditions and the much-desired Valentine’s Day.

The après-ski in Andorra

Of course, no snow day is complete without après-ski. A tradition that turns afternoons and evenings into moments of relaxation and entertainment. Andorra offers a wide variety of options.

Plans to do 365 days a year

In Andorra you’ll find activities to enjoy all year round. From shopping in its commercial hubs, to visiting museums that tell the story of the country’s history and culture, to relaxing or having fun in Caldea. Ice skating is an option at any time of year, while visiting the picturesque Andorran villages allows you to discover the rustic charm of the Pyrenees. Each activity offers a unique experience, making Andorra the perfect place for those looking for variety and charm all year round.

circuitos de esquí

Ski circuits in Grandvalira: discover them!

Have you heard of Grandvalira’s special ski circuits? They are a series of itineraries, differentiated by level and discipline, designed to explore the slopes in a different way and at the same time be a real challenge. We’ll tell you about them here.

Fun Cross ski circuits

The little skiers will test their skills on the boards with lots of curves, jumps, turns and tunnels. As well as having a great time, they will gain agility and experience with 5 different circuits specially created for this purpose.

The Fun Cross circuits are spread over the El Tarter and Soldeu sectors.

For beginners there is the Marmota Fun Cross, at the foot of Soldeu ski slopes, with a length of 332 metres and 25 metres of vertical drop. The Òliba Fun Cross is also in this area and is for more experienced skiers, with a blue level. On the other hand, to ski the Astor Fun Cross Ride you need a very high level to be able to overcome its obstacles.
In El Tater, the resort offers the Guineu Fun Cross circuit, with a ride of 880 m. and 165 m. of vertical drop on red pistes. And finally, the Ós Fun Cross Ride for very experienced children who can enjoy the longest circuit with a length of 490 m. and 175 m. of vertical drop.

Easy Way, Fun Way and Skimo Way ski circuits

Following these circuits is another way of discovering the resort. To complete them you need to have a minimum level of skiing, as you’ll be following medium/high level pistes. They are also ideal for families. The circuits are in the Grau Roig, Pas de la Casa and Encamp sectors.

– Easy Way

This ski circuit crosses 6 blue pistes and 8 lifts. You should estimate an approximate duration of 4 hours to complete it.

– Fun Way

This route requires a higher level of skiing, as it only runs along red pistes. It lasts between 3 to 5 hours depending on how you choose the 11 pistes and 10 lifts. The effort will be well worth it as it will take you to discover the most unique places in the resort.

– Skimo Way

In this case we change the equipment from alpine skiing to ski mountaineering. It is a route that runs through emblematic points of the resort linking Pas de la Casa with Encamp and is suitable for all levels.

How to get to the slopes from the apartments?

El Peretol is the closest sector to Els Llacs Mountain Apartments. Located in Bordes de Envalira, it gives access to the slopes via the Pla de Pedres chairlift. In this area of the resort you will find a car park with limited spaces and also a free shuttle service for guests staying at Bordes de Envalira, which runs every 20 minutes when the slopes are open. You can consult the timetables here.

Tips for skiing in Andorra

Some of the circuits require a good level of skiing to enjoy the harder slopes. To enjoy a full and safe experience, start gradually on simpler routes. Each one is duly signposted with the corresponding level: the green runs are the easiest, followed by the blue ones, which are intermediate, the medium-high level red ones and the black ones, reserved for the most experienced skiers.
If you are new to skiing, we recommend that you take some lessons. The resort has ski schools in all sectors. Starting with an instructor will allow you to acquire technique and good practice from the first moment you step on the boards. You can book individual or group courses in alpine skiing, snowboarding or ski mountaineering, both for adults and children.

Now that you know the Grandvalira ski circuits, you can’t miss the chance to try them out.
Book your accommodation now at Els Llacs Mountain Apartments with your ski pass in Grandvalira and enjoy the snow in Andorra.

Splash! The latest attraction

Andorra has something for everyone. On this occasion, we’ll tell you about the newest one. We are talking about Splash: the water slide at the Canillo Ice Palace (Palau de Gel de Canillo). This winter, you will be able to enjoy this brand new activity, 10 minutes by car from the flats. It has three 7-metre-high slides and a 53-metre-long course that runs partially along the outside of the building. It’ suitable for children from 10 years of age and over, with a minimum height of 1.20 metres. For the youngest children, from 3 to 12 years old, you will find slides adapted to their age in the indoor pool. And of course, you can also go ice skating on the recently renovated Olympic ice rink.

Make the most of your last day on the slopes. You can explore new slopes or repeat your favourites. In the evening, enjoy a farewell dinner in one of the most emblematic restaurants in the area. For this occasion we propose the Kao Soldeu restaurant at the Park Piolets 5* hotel, part of our hotel group, where you can enjoy traditional Chinese haute cuisine and toast to an unforgettable Easter.

These Easter plans are ideal for both ski enthusiasts and those looking for a unique getaway. They ensure 4 exciting days of skiing, snow activities, après-ski and relaxation in cosy, pet-friendly flats.
No one in the family will be left behind and you’ll have a great time.

esquí nórdico

Discover what Nordic skiing is like at Naturland: another experience to try this winter

Although downhill and ski mountaineering are the best-known and most popular options in Andorra, there is a third way to glide over the snow: Nordic skiing. If you are a lover of this winter sport, or if you want to get started in this discipline, the slopes of the Naturland resort await you.

Naturland: the destination for Nordic skiing

– Nordic skiing

Located in Sant Julià de Lòria, in the south of the country, this resort invites you to explore its 15 kilometres of slopes of all levels, through the La Rabassa forest. To get there, you have to go to the 2000 m elevation.
In addition to the trails, it also offers a cross-country ski school with specialised instructors, ideal for beginners and experienced skiers alike. You can also book excursions with expert guides to discover the stunning landscapes surrounding the resort. And to complete the experience, it also offers equipment hire shops, ensuring you have everything you need for your day in the snow.

– Adventure park

Naturland is also an outdoor adventure park offering a host of activities in the heart of the mountains, both in winter and summer. It also has the Tonbotronc, the longest nature toboggan run in the world with a distance of 5.3 km and a gradient of 400 metres, on which you can reach 35 km/hour.
Naturland is undoubtedly the perfect plan for a day of adventure.

What you need for Nordic skiing

If you have not yet taken up this winter sport, the first thing you need to know is that the boards, shoes and poles are different to those you would use for alpine skiing.
The skis are thinner and the binding is mobile, as you have to walk on the ski to glide across the snow. The poles are longer than those used in alpine skiing, to support you better, as you will need to use more force to propel yourself. Finally, cross-country ski boots are more flexible and lighter than ski boots.

Doing sport and getting fit

Nordic skiing is a very complete sport, as it works all parts of the body, including the torso and arms. It does not require any previous physical condition; it is accessible to all ages, opening up a world of possibilities for beginners and sports enthusiasts alike. The tranquillity of its circuits is combined with a less crowded atmosphere than alpine skiing. In addition, Nordic skiing is characterised by gentler slopes as it takes place on circuits through forests and mainly on flat trails.

Nordic ski passes for cross-country skiing in Naturland

The resort offers several alternatives for cross-country skiing in its facilities. You can buy from a one-day ski pass to a complete package, which is highly recommended to try this sport as it includes a day pass, ski equipment, lessons with an instructor and lunch.

A good rest after a day in the snow

Although on this occasion you have to go a little further than usual to experience one of Andorra’s winter activities, the journey will be worth it.
When you get back to the flat, all you have to do is relax. Let yourself be enveloped by the spaciousness and comfort of a perfectly equipped space, designed to guarantee your rest and well-being. Book your flat and come and enjoy the winter in Andorra. If you wish to book a ski pass for Nordic skiing or any other snow activity, contact us and we will manage your reservation.

We’re kicking off an exciting year at Grandvalira Resorts. Get ready for action and excitement, because the most eagerly awaited sporting events are about to hit the Andorran ski slopes. Don’t miss this opportunity: join the adventure and experience the great competitions in Andorra.

Women’s Slalom and Giant Slalom World Cup

Very close to the flats, the Avet slope, located in Soldeu, will host a women’s alpine skiing World Cup event in February. On this occasion, the most technical events will be disputed: the slalom and the giant slalom. After last year, when the finals were held, this season the best female skiers, including the current champion, Mikaela Shiffrin, return to compete in an event that will not lack excitement. Among them
📍 The AUDI Fis Ski World Cup Soldeu 2024 will take place on 10 and 11 February, on the Avet piste in Soldeu, Grandvalira.

The Freeride World Tour comes back to Ordino Arcalís

The week before, the freestyle championship par excellence arrives. The world’s top snow and ski riders have an appointment in Andorra to delight the public with impossible jumps. Since 2015, the Ordino Arcalís resort has hosted one of the Freeride World Tour 2024 By Peak Performance events. It is a worldwide competition made up of only 5 events, so it is an honour that one of them takes place in Andorra.
The Freeride World Tour will take place from the 1st to the 7th of February, in the Ordino Arcalís resort of Grandvalira Resorts, located in the northern valley of the country. To move around we advise you to do it by car and leave the flat in good time.

World Cup KM Launched in Grau Roig

Once again, the Riberal track will be the setting for a World Cup event of the Launched Kilometre World Cup. In March we will be able to see the fastest skiers in the world in action in Grandvalira. It is the only ski slope in Andorra prepared for this type of competition, which can reach up to 200 km/hour.
The length of the track is 887 metres with a braking area of 450 metres. It has a gradient of 200 metres, with the beginning of the track measuring 2,538 metres and the end 2,338 metres. It also has a 10-metre tower at the starting point, to ensure the maximum gradient of 78%.
📍 The KM Launch races will be held from 12 to 14 March, on the Riberal piste, in the Grau Roig sector of Grandvalira. This competition, like the Alpine skiing World Cup, is also close to the Els Llacs Apartaments.

2029 World Championships

Andorra is a candidate to host the 2029 Alpine skiing world championships, the highest competition in this discipline. Grandvalira is up against 4 other candidates and the mystery will be revealed in June 2024 when the FIS (International Ski Federation) will announce the chosen one.

Book your accommodation in Andorra

This season there are plenty of events awaiting you in Andorra. We are sure that we will attend them all. So, if you also want to be a spectator in the front row, you only have to book your flat in Els Llacs Mountain Apartments, for the desired dates.

We are located in Bordes d’Envalira near the sectors, Soldeu and Grau Roig where the World Cups are held. To get to Ordino-Arcalís, you will have to travel a little further, as the resort is located in the north of the country, but by car you can get there in about 1 hour.
Experience the thrill of the big competitions in Andorra!

Grandvalira grows with more kilometres of slopes

That’s right! This year you will be able to enjoy 3 new red pistes in the Canillo sector, which have been built in the Encampanada area next to the Seig chairlift, which is also new. The resort has now grown to 140 pistes and 215 kilometres.
On the other hand, it has also implemented improvements in the high section of the Port-Grau piste in the Pas de la Casa and Grau Roig sectors, in the Port d’Envalira – Antenes area. This area will be the entrance to the future ICONIC high-altitude sports performance centre.

Ski mountaineering and snowshoeing circuits

Ski mountaineering and snowshoeing enthusiasts will also see their opportunities in the snow increase. It is true that alpine skiing is the king sport, but Grandvalira is committed to a good number of snow sports and activities and incorporates new ones every season.
In Soldeu you will find a new ski mountaineering circuit and 6 new snowshoeing circuits in the Soldeu, El Tarter and Canillo sectors.

Improvements in infrastructures and services

The resort is making improvements to its facilities to ensure a comfortable and pleasant stay for all skiers.
Pas de la Casa inaugurates a new multifunctional building, the 2,222 Costa Rodona, with ski lockers and 230 lockers.
In the 3 Grandvalira snowparks, up to 8 modules have been added and 2 more have been improved. This gives freestyle lovers a new inventive way to enjoy their favourite discipline.
It also offers renewed proposals for families at the Pas de la Casa and Cortals children’s school, with improved circuits, and at the Kids Forest in Pas de la Casa, where a new circuit with more modules and play elements suitable for children has been opened. For its part, Soldeu has refurbished the nursery and has also extended its crèche.

Have fun in the snow with original activities in Andorra

Do you want to know everything Grandvalira has to offer in winter? We’ll tell you about the top snow activities you’ll find in the resort this winter to combine with skiing and snowboarding, or if you prefer to enjoy your holidays in the snow in a different way. Are you up for trying out new proposals?

Which snow activities to choose in Andorra?

In addition to ski-related sports, Grandvalira offers other snow activities during the winter season. The options are varied and suitable for all ages, to do as a couple, with the family or with friends. Although most of them take place during the day, some others can be booked at night.
As these are snow activities, make sure you wrap up warm with gloves, trousers, jacket and sunglasses to protect you from the cold and the sun.

Here are some fun and easy snow activities beyond skiing and snowboarding.

Snowmobiling

This is a unique way to experience the snowy landscapes of the mountains. Snowmobiles can usually accommodate two people, and you must be at least 18 years old and have a driving licence (children aged 6-17 must be accompanied by an adult). Prices vary according to the rental time: you can choose between 30 minutes, 1 or 2 hours. The excursions start from the Grau Roig activity centre in the Moretó forest near the flats, or in Pas de la Casa. They are available at night but only from Grau Roig.

Mushing: dog sledge rides

This is one of the most popular snow activities. It is an excellent option for families or couples in which you can ride as a passenger, but if you dare you can also drive. In Grandvalira, the sledges have 2 seats and there is the possibility of booking it as a family with 2 adults and 1 or 2 children from 3 to 11 years old. Children under 3 years of age do not need a seat, as they ride in the arms of an adult and do not pay, children from 12 years of age must be accompanied by an adult. The excursions are 2, 3 and 5 km in the marked circuits of the adventure centre of Grau Roig and Riba Escorxada in El Tarter.

Snowshoeing with a guide

Exploring the mountain on snowshoes is a unique experience. Delve into the beauty of nature, walk on the snow and discover breathtaking landscapes. This is one of the perfect snow activities in Andorra for the whole family, groups of friends or couples. In Grandvalira you can book guided excursions for 2 hours, half a day or a whole day in the Grau Roig sector. If you want to make it even more special, sign up for a night outing under the stars.

Snow activities are also après-ski

Indeed, as we have seen, many of these excursions can be done at night, but there are more.
In Pas de la Casa, the La Solana/Tubs piste is still open from Thursday to Saturday until 20h, so you can experience the sensation of skiing at night on a completely illuminated piste.
In the Peretol sector, the one closest to the flats, there is the Sunset Park Peretol, the freestyle area that opens from Tuesday to Sunday from 15h to 21h.
And finally, if you want to spend a super fun afternoon after the resort has closed, you just have to go to Soldeu and go down the slopes on an articulated sled, the Snake Gliss, guided by a monitor.

Holiday apartaments to enjoy snow activities

Els Llacs Mountain Apartments are located 700 metres from the Peretol access to the resort. They are unique mountain flats with all the comforts you can imagine. They also have a children’s area and a spa so that everyone can have a good time after a day of snow activities. Would you like to try them out?

What clothing does your child need for the snow?

The important thing is that you travel with what you need so that you don’t lack anything, but that you don’t carry unnecessary clothes either. As you will see, one of the basic premises is to dress them in layers, protecting them from the cold and at the same time being able to take clothes off when they are hot and prevent them from sweating.

– Thermal clothing

Start with a T-shirt and thermal tights. They need to fit snug but not tight, otherwise they won’t be able to move freely. Make sure they are breathable so that the garment stays dry at all times. There are tops with high collars, but if they have a neckwear, you won’t need them.

– Anorak and ski trousers

The jacket and trousers should be waterproof so that water doesn’t get through when they fall or play in the snow. If you feel they are not warm enough, you can add a middle layer, such as a polar fleece, between the thermal T-shirt and the anorak. It is very practical that the wrist of the anorak has velcro so that you can adjust the jacket to the arm and keep out the cold. For younger children, you can dress them in ski overalls, which are easier to put on as they have fewer zips and buttons.

– Ski socks

It is essential that their feet are well protected and with the right material to avoid the cold and chafing from the boots.

– Gloves

It’s best to play it safe and have two pairs. Children love to play in the snow, they end up getting them wet, even if they are waterproof. Always carry a second pair with you so they don’t get their little hands wet.

– Goggles

Check that they fit and hold their face well and that they have good visibility for both cloudy and sunny days.

Boards, boots and poles for the little ones

As they are still growing, consider whether you prefer to buy the equipment or rent it, which is also a good solution. Boards, bindings and poles depend on their weight and height and may not be suitable for them from one year to the next.
You can rent or buy ski equipment in the shop of Park Piolets Mountain Hotel&Spa, the 5* hotel that belongs to the same group as the apartaments.

Sun protection

You probably already know this, but it’s worth remembering the importance of applying sun cream and lipstick to protect yourself from the sun. At the chemist’s they will help you find the one that best suits your child’s skin.
